100 Facts

100 things about Ariela that you may or may not know. (A work in progress)

001
My middle name is Etta. I don't like it very much, and I try to leave my middle initial out of forms and things when possible.

002
I'm a jack-of-all-trades artist. The catch is that I'm not on-the-spot original. I need to use static references for things (i.e. my portraits are done from photos, I take poses from magazines, etc.). But once I have a template to start from, I make it into my own thing.

003
I grew up as a religious orthodox Jew, but now I think the greater Jewish community is pretty self-destructive. If I had to call myself anything, I would probably identify most with agnosticism, eudaimonism, and of course pragmatism.

004
I used to like country music. Really. It was that phase where you're obsessed with the stuff your parents like at the time. I grew out of it when I developed a life.

005
I love seeing dead pigeons/roadkill on the road, or rats/mice killed by traps. It's not the "kill them all" part, but more a fascination with the squished remains. I have no idea why.

006
I figured out how negative numbers worked on my own when I was 6, and was a grammar tutor by age 10.

007
I ate a flower at a Disney park once. I picked it from its pot, stared at it, shrugged, and ate it. I figured Disney wouldn't plant anything poisonous, what with all the orally-fixated children running everywhere. I didn't die, so I guess I was right.

008
I like mixing weird foods together, just to see how they'll taste. A couple of infamous combinations include chocolate cake + barbeque sauce, and lettuce + jelly.

009
I'm scared of mist rainbows. You know, the kind that appear in waterfalls or when you're taking a late-afternoon shower. When I was younger I would run screaming from the rainbow that would appear in the sprinkler in the backyard. Other than that, I really have no idea where this fear originated.

010
I'm also afraid of small boats. Rowboats, paddle boats, gondolas, anything like that. Well, it's more of a trust issue of being in a small boat with other people. I can swim, so it's not the water. I'd probably be okay in a canoe/kayak by myself, but I'd rather not try it to find out. Ferries and cruise ships are fine though.

011
I accidentally dropped a small kitten in a barn once, when I was younger and staying at a farm. It escaped unscathed, but I still regret it.

012
I'm not particularly superstitious. I've never found the number 13 to be unlucky, and I like black cats. I won't walk under a ladder, but that's because it's a stupid thing to do in general. I used to not step on cracks in the sidewalk, but I'm older now and realize that's just silly.

013
I want very much to believe in reincarnation. I like the idea a lot. Especially the fantasty where you keep your current life's knowledge and memories.

014
I WILL beat you in Scrabble. The only reasons I would lose are bad luck with drawing letters or an unforgiving board layout.

015
I can more often than not diagnose a computer problem over the phone without seeing the computer itself. I'd rather be there to tinker, but I've built and fixed enough computers to recognize the issues from afar.

016
I don't drive, but I can change a tire (provided the nuts aren't screwed on too tight). I could also probably do a lot more with cars if I cared enough.

017
I was once on Lithium/Lamictal briefly for depression, and heard fuzzy AM news radio through the pin in my jaw (from a root canal).

018
You know those glowing tube necklaces they give out at kid parties? I used to be able to close one around my waist.

019
My first pets were a bunch of fish from the local saltwater inlet. The biggest one was a female we named Queen Elizabeth. She lived for 5 years in a dinky tank setup. A few years later I had a handful of pink cichlids that tried to breed about 3 times, but kept eating their own babies. They all mysteriously died one day. I still don't know why.

020
My current pets are a pitbull-lab mix named Sydney, and a Leopard Gecko named Ajax. Click on their names for photos.

021
I have a quasi-photographic visual memory. I say quasi because I can literally walk through memories, but I sometimes miss a detail here and there if I don't pay attention or care enough. I guess the way it works best resembles a flashbulb memory. I don't think it extends to text/numbers and books though, because I still have to memorize things like anyone else.

022
When my brother and I were younger we used to burn bugs on the back porch with a magnifying glass. Pill bugs pop up into the air like popcorn.

023
I have a lot more emotional experience, maturity, and social understanding than most women my age. I don't relish the memories that got me to that point, but it does allow me to help others who are going through similar things. I'm always the one my friends come to for advice and friend-therapy.

024
I'm still undergoing treatment for Major Depressive Disorder (I'm on Prozac at the moment). I've been struggling with depression my whole life, but only began treatment for it in 2002.

025
In highschool, my best friend and I wrote notes to each other in phoenetic Greek (English words spelled out using the Greek alphabet). Nobody ever knew what the heck we were doing.

026
My eyesight is terrible. Without my glasses, I can't see 12-point text from more than 6-7 inches away.

027
I have never thrown up or passed out while drunk. The closest I ever came to passing out was in Italy, when we went out for a bunch of shots and I lay my head down on the table (eyes open) for a minute or so.

028
However, I HAVE passed out from giving blood (see goal #64). I got really tired, and suddenly I was panicking and trying to get up, with three nurses trying to hold me down. I had no idea where I was for a good half a minute. It was freaking scary.

029
In summer 1998 I fractured my left ring finger by falling down the stairs at Niagara Falls. I never got to enjoy the sights, because I was in too much pain to see. Aside from that, I've never broken any bones.

030
At some point in my life I had the star chart and constellations memorized. Now I'm lucky if I remember half of it.

031
To this day I have never smoked a cigarette or tried drugs (and I don't intend to start). I tried hookah once, but that was it.

032
I used to have a fear of heights, but once I stopped being afraid of death, the fear of heights went with it.

033
I used to be a chronic nail-biter. I successfully kicked the habit in 2005. Go me.

034
I have a really bad trauma-phobia relating to eyes and eye gore. When I was 5, my brother cut his eye on the corner of one of those metal mailboxes that stick out of the front door. He got the injury, I got the psychological trauma. 19 years later, I can't even watch someone put in contact lenses or eye drops, and I freak out if someone does that "eyelid flip" thing. And forget about gory horror films with eye violence. I also can't see 3D movies, which is kind of irrational and annoying.

035
If my house was on fire I would take my dog and gecko, and into a backpack I'd shove my laptop, DVD backups of my files (I keep them in a soft binder), and my passport, wallet, cellphone, and camera.

036
I'm a textbook Libra.

037
I used to identify as bisexual, leaning toward women. Now however, I've accepted a more complete gay lifestyle. Coming from an orthodox background I know quite a few people who would be uncomfortable with that, but it doesn't really matter. It's who I am.

038
My lucky numbers are 26 and 107. The first because I used to have these weird visions a lot as a kid of the number 26 in front of me, with a blue 2 and a pink 6. I never understood why, but I adopted the number anyway. 107 is my ultra special number, because it pops up EVERYWHERE over and over in my life (sometimes with extra zeros in the middle, but those don't count). My birthday is 10/7. It comes up in receipts, hotel room numbers, invoices, model numbers, my SS#, concert/show ticket seats (I really can't count how many times I've randomly gotten seat #107), and plenty of other things so often that it passes "coincidental" and moves into the realm of "freaky". Go figure.

039
I taught myself Photoshop starting when I was 13, using Photoshop 4. I learned by tweaking and experimenting, and I'm pretty well-versed in the program now. A decade and several program upgrades later (I use CS3 now), I'm finally figuring out that I should probably make a career out of it.

040
I taught myself HTML and CSS in much the same manner. I haven't taken classes in those, because right now all the information and tutorials I need can be found via Google.

041
I'm a DUNCE when it comes to remembering celebrity names. I know most of the big and/or obvious ones like George Clooney and Renee Zellweger, but don't be surprised if you mention someone like Ryan Reynolds or Jackie Mason (I had to look them up) and I give you a dumb look.

042
I yell answers at the TV during Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, and Millionaire. I'm usually right.

043
My life seems to be an endless cycle of clean-lazy-messy-clean. Every so often I go on crazy cleaning binges and get my room or files or whatever super organized. Then a few months later it's back to cluttered again.

044
I'm not clinically obsessive-compulsive, but there are a few things I like to do (but if I don't, no worries). These include arranging things in one of alphabetical/numerical/color/size order, and turning away a fork or knife on the table so it's not pointing at my face. There are probably others, but they're not important enough to recall on short notice.

045
I draw some kickass portraits. I work best from existing photos though.
